A tribute to Martyn Young

Martyn was highly admired among the business community in the North East which has been rocked by this sudden loss.

“You hear that man?”
“Hear what?”
“The sound of money printing…”

This was the gist of a phone call made from one friend in the printing trade to another. That sound was Martyn Young’s second-hand offset press, recently installed in his garage. His excitement was well placed given the success to come.

Martyn, along with his wife and business partner Donna founded First2Print in 2010, trading in shared offices with nothing more than a couple of copiers. A strange decision given the print industry was extremely tough at the time, even more so with the country in recession. But Martyn had a canny knack for identifying and uncovering opportunities where others only saw difficulties.

He was a true innovator, which Martyn demonstrated very clearly as he moved into e-commerce. YourWalls.com and WhereTheTradeBuys.co.uk, in particular are much admired for their progressive approach.

Collaboration was central to his business activities. Following an introduction at a Dscoop event in early 2014, Martyn joined forces with Gary Peeling to drive his enterprise forward at an even greater pace.

Martyn was highly admired among the business community in the North East which has been rocked by this sudden loss. Always happy to step up and help anyone, he understood more than anyone that what you put into things is what you get out of them.

His impact was not just local, on Tuesday the news spread throughout the industry. A print business as far as Sydney, Australia stopped its operations for a moment as the director shared this unforeseen news with the team.

His family and colleagues have been overwhelmed by the support from customers, suppliers and equipment manufacturers. All of whom identified the unique passion and enthusiasm which Martyn conducted himself with.

WhereTheTradeBuys is likely to be featured in numerous fast track tables in 2017, but it’s not all about growth. For now, it’s about aiding the recovery of his valued work colleagues/friends.

It’s clear that Martyn could identify talent. By providing inspirational leadership and support he leaves behind a dedicated team with a focused vision for the future.

The industry has lost one of its brightest talents. His business legacy is clear to see, but more importantly Martyn’s “can do” spirit will live on in the many he inspired all over the world.

“In 2014 Martyn picked up the phone and I gained a brilliant new business partner. In 2017 I lost a brother. I think that says it all…”

– Gary Peeling
